Job Description
At Moree Plains Shire Council, we are looking for a reliable, self-motivated, and safety-conscious individual to join us as a General Maintenance Hand. If you take pride in your work and enjoy carrying out high-quality repairs across a variety of community facilities, we want to hear from you.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Team Leader Building Maintenance, you will carry out essential repairs and minor maintenance tasks across Council buildings and facilities. This hands-on role is critical to ensuring our assets remain safe and functional for the community.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Performing general repair tasks, including minor carpentry, painting, basic plumbing, concreting, and welding.
Undertaking physical maintenance safely, operating tools and equipment in compliance with Work Health and Safety procedures.
Conducting routine visual inspections to identify hazards and maintenance needs, such as preliminary asbestos identification.
Liaising with tenants and staff to assess on-site issues and prioritise responses based on urgency and risk.
Procuring necessary materials for works in line with Council’s cost-effective procurement principles.
Recording work details electronically, updating job tasks and completing Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).
Collaborating with contractors and providing practical support to other maintenance officers.
The location for this role is based at the Max Centre in Moree, with travel to remote sites required.

About You
You are an organised professional who takes pride in maintaining a clean and safe work environment. You are a team player who can follow both verbal and written instructions with care and attention to detail.
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:
Trade qualification in Building/Construction and/or significant hands-on maintenance experience.
Good literacy and numeracy skills for measurements and calculations.
Base-level computer skills for data entry, emails, and electronic timesheets.
Ability to operate plant machinery and tools safely within their capabilities.
A strong commitment to Work Health and Safety and safe work practices.
Required Tickets, Licences and/or Qualifications:
General Construction Induction Certificate (White Card).
Class C Drivers Licence.
Desirable Criteria
Previous Local Government experience.
Class HR Drivers Licence (NSW).
Required Clearances and Checks:
Pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol testing.
Working with Children Check.
Verification of immunisation history (Hepatitis A, B, and Tetanus).
